Release time: Jul 10,2025

Postoperative re-examination showed that the left eye's capsule was in the correct position, the intraocular pressure was normal, the anterior chamber was deep, and the cornea was clear. The patient was satisfied with the postoperative effect and expressed sincere gratitude to the doctors!

On July 5, the Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province successfully performed its first third-generation Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) surgery. Professor Zhan Bei's team implanted the third-generation FCVB for a patient with silicone oil-dependent eye, preserving hope for the patient. As a new eye-preserving technology, FCVB provides a novel treatment approach for patients with fundus diseases such as severe retinal detachment, ocular trauma, and silicone oil-dependent eye, and is of great significance in saving patients' eyeballs.

Overview of the Condition

The patient is a 54-year-old female. Three years ago, her left eye suffered an ocular trauma that led to retinal detachment, and she underwent silicone oil tamponade surgery. Recently, she felt eye swelling, so her family took her to the Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province for examination. Upon admission, the left eye's vision was questionable light perception; there was no conjunctival hyperemia, the cornea was transparent, the anterior chamber was clear with normal depth; silicone oil emulsification particles were visible on the iris surface, accompanied by posterior synechia; the pupil was round, and the intraocular lens was in the correct position; the vitreous cavity was filled with silicone oil with visible emulsification particles; the fundus showed retinal detachment and proliferative organization, with silicone oil visible under the retina. The intraocular pressure of both eyes was 35 mmHg after being controlled with 3 types of intraocular pressure-lowering drugs.

As the patient had silicone oil-dependent eye, she needed to stay in a prone position for a long time. Hoping to solve the problem of maintaining the prone position, she accepted Professor Zhan's suggestion to undergo the third-generation Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) surgery.

On the afternoon of July 5, Professor Zhan's team performed the third-generation FCVB surgery on the patient. The folded capsule was implanted into the eye through a minimally invasive incision, and then silicone oil was injected into the capsule via the drainage valve to support the retina and maintain intraocular pressure. Finally, the third-generation FCVB was successfully implanted into the patient's eye. Postoperative re-examination showed that the left eye's capsule was in the correct position, the intraocular pressure was normal, the anterior chamber was deep, and the cornea was clear. The patient was satisfied with the postoperative effect and expressed sincere gratitude to the doctors!
