Nanyang Eye Hospital Performs Third-Generation FCVB Surgery to Preserve Eyeball for Silicone Oil-Dependent Eye Patient

Release time: Jul 11,2025

The patient was satisfied with the postoperative effect and thanked the doctors for preserving her eyeball.

On July 8th, Nanyang Eye Hospital successfully performed the third-generation Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) surgery. With the support and guidance of Professor Li Bing, Director of the Department, Professor Liu Junlei's team implanted the third-generation FCVB for a patient with eyeball atrophy caused by long-term silicone oil-dependent eye. FCVB is a new eye-preserving technology that provides a new treatment for patients with fundus diseases such as severe retinal detachment, ocular trauma, and silicone oil-dependent eye, and is of great significance in saving patients' eyeballs.

Overview of the Condition

The patient is a 47-year-old Ms. Y. Nine years ago, she underwent left eye vitrectomy + silicone oil tamponade due to "left eye rhegmatogenous retinal detachment complicated with ciliary body detachment". After the operation, retinal detachment recurred and the retina failed to reattach, leading to progressive eyeball atrophy and corneal degeneration. In the past year, the left corneal gradually turned white, and drug treatment was given but with poor results. When she came to Nanyang Eye Hospital for examination recently, Professor Liu Junlei's team found that her left eye vision was at the level of hand movement, intraocular pressure was about 10mmHg, and the left eye was severely atrophied.

What is Silicone Oil-Dependent Eye?

Due to the non-regenerative nature of the natural vitreous, when vitreoretinal diseases occur or the vitreous is injured by ocular trauma, it is necessary to remove the natural vitreous through surgery and fill it with a suitable artificial vitreous substitute.
At present, the commonly used tamponade in clinical practice is mainly silicone oil. However, long-term silicone oil tamponade is prone to cause a series of postoperative complications, such as complicated cataract, secondary glaucoma, corneal degeneration, and silicone oil emulsification. Some patients may eventually face eyeball atrophy or eyeball enucleation followed by artificial eye implantation, which affects their appearance and further impacts their life, work, and mental health.

Silicone oil-dependent eye)

Ms. Y's left eye had severe atrophy due to silicone oil-dependent eye for many years, and she hoped to preserve her eyeball as much as possible. After full communication with Ms. Y and her family, Professor Liu performed the third-generation Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) surgery for her.

On the afternoon of July 8th, with the support of Professor Li Bing, Professor Liu's team performed the third-generation FCVB surgery for the patient. The folded FCVB was implanted into the eye through a minimally invasive incision, and then silicone oil was injected into the capsule through the drainage valve to support the retina and maintain intraocular pressure. Finally, the third-generation FCVB was successfully implanted into the patient's eye. Postoperative re-examination showed that the capsule was in the correct position, intraocular pressure was normal, and the anterior chamber was deep. The patient was satisfied with the postoperative effect and thanked the doctors for preserving her eyeball.
