FCB Minimally Invasive Technique Takes Center Stage at 2025 Retina Conference
Release time: Jun 10,2025
With over 1,000 clinical applications nationwide, FCB’s minimally invasive design and high success rate have revitalized external approaches for RRD. The conference’s focus on external surgery signaled a paradigm shift, with FCB emerging as a game-changer for patients worldwide.
On June 5, the 26th Forum on Ocular Fundus Diseases and International Retina Symposium (Retina China 2025) opened in Wuxi, gathering global ophthalmology experts to explore cutting-edge advancements in fundus disease treatment. Three leading specialists spotlighted theFoldable Capsular Buckle (FCB)for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Expert Insights on FCB Innovation
Prof. Dong Fangtian (PUMCH Beijing):
In "Minimally Invasive External Approach: The Inevitable Path for RRD," he presented 42 FCB cases (2024), showing 40 successful retinal reattachments. FCB’s 5 "No" techniques (no retrobulbar anesthesia, muscle traction, scleral drainage, intraoperative localization, or cryotherapy) minimize trauma. He emphasized FCB’s "flyswatter effect" for dual-layer tamponade and noted it’s ideal for vulnerable patients, predicting it will replace traditional scleral buckling.
Prof. Tian Xuemin (988th Hospital PLA):
His analysis of 176 eyes (84 with 5 "No" FCB) showed comparable reattachment rates to conventional methods but with shorter surgery times. While 5 "No" FCB required more buckle repositioning, it improved post-op vision and patient comfort. "Once you try FCB, you’ll love it," he concluded, highlighting its versatility for RRD.
Prof. Hu Zizhong (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital):
Sharing 19 cases from small to large tears (≥3PD), he detailed FCB’s evolution in treating complex RRD: from nasal to temporal tears, simple atrophic holes to deformed tears. Key tips included precise pre-op planning, intraoperative indirect ophthalmoscopy, and post-op laser timing, stressing personalized adaptation of 5 "No" techniques.

Postoperative examination showed that the retinal holes in the right eye were located on the indentation position and attached well, and the rest of the examination results were basically the same as before.
