"Reshaping Vision, Lighting Up Lives" Public Welfare Rescue Project for Ocular Trauma and Retinal Detachment Officially Launched

Release time: May 21,2025

On the afternoon of May 17, the launch ceremony of the "Reshaping Vision, Lighting Up Lives" public welfare rescue project was successfully held at the "9th Xiaoxiang International Ophthalmology Summit Forum and Hunan Province Difficult Ocular Fundus Diseases/Ocular Trauma Training Class" in Changsha, Hunan. Professor Lin Xiaofeng from Aier Eye Hospital Changsha Medical Center delivered a speech and jointly launched the project with Peng Zhikun, Chairman of the Ai Eye Public Welfare Foundation; Professor Chen Zhongping from Changsha Aier Eye Hospital; and Professor Gao Qianying from Guangzhou Vesber Biotechnology Co., Ltd.

Project Overview

  • Sponsor: Ai Eye Public Welfare Foundation
  • Supporting Unit: Guangzhou Vesber Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
  • Implementation Period: May 1, 2025, to May 1, 2026
  • Coverage: Expected to reach 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across China, with a focus on remote areas with scarce medical resources.

Objective: To provide medical assistance for low-income patients with ocular trauma or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, offering hope for vision restoration and ensuring high-quality medical resources reach those in need.

Background and Significance

In China, numerous low-income patients with eye diseases are plunged into darkness due to unaffordable medical costs. Statistics show:
  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment affects approximately 8 out of 100,000 people, with a high incidence.
  • Nearly 50,000 patients undergo eyeball enucleation each year due to severe ocular trauma, imposing heavy physical and mental burdens on families.
Traditional treatments face challenges like silicone oil complications and repeated surgeries. Innovations such as the Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) and Foldable Capsular Buckle (FCB) developed by Professor Gao Qianying’s team offer new hope, preventing enucleation and calling for broader support.

Project Initiatives

  1. Financial Aid: Subsidize partial surgical costs for eligible patients with ocular trauma or retinal detachment.
  2. Public Awareness Campaigns: Promote eye health education and free screening clinics to enhance ocular care awareness nationwide, aligning with China’s Healthy China initiative.

Innovative Ophthalmic Technologies

Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB)

  • Design: Mimics the natural vitreous cavity with medical-grade silicone, featuring a balloon, drainage tube, valve, and fixing loops.
  • Function: Implanted folded into the vitreous cavity, filled with silicone oil to support the retina, maintain intraocular pressure, and prevent silicone oil migration/complications.
  • Goal: Preserve the eyeball, avoid enucleation, and restore vision.

Foldable Capsular Buckle (FCB)

  • Minimally Invasive Approach: Implanted subconjunctivally, inflated with saline to "lift" the detached retina like a jack.
  • Advantages:
    • 5 "No"s: No retrobulbar anesthesia, no muscle traction, no scleral fluid drainage, no intraoperative localization, no cryotherapy.
    • Shorter surgery time (10 minutes vs. 50 minutes traditionally), broader tamponade range, less pain, and fewer complications.

Commitment to Innovation and Public Welfare

Vesber remains dedicated to advancing ophthalmic technologies, while the Ai Eye Foundation leads efforts to ensure these innovations reach underserved communities. Together, they strive to "reshape vision, light up lives," and contribute to China’s ocular health equity.
