Changsha Aier Eye Hospital Launches Multicenter, Prospective Comparative Study on Foldable Capsular Buckle (FCB) for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment with Subretinal or Anterior Chamber Fluid Drainage

On May 7, the launch meeting for the clinical protocol of the "Multicenter, Prospective Comparative Study on Using Foldable Capsular Buckle (FCB) for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment with Subretinal or Anterior Chamber Fluid Drainage," led by Professor Chen Zhongping of Changsha Aier Eye Hospital, was held online, marking the official initiation of this multicenter study.

Conference Highlights
  • Chairperson: Professor Chen Zhongping (Changsha Aier Eye Hospital)
  • Speakers: Professor Liu Xiangming (Yueyang Aier Eye Hospital) and Dr. Liu Hengwei (Changsha Aier Eye Hospital)
  • Attendees: Professor Chen Juan (Changsha), Professor Huang Hui (Xiangxi), Professor Huang Haitao (Yongzhou), Professor Li Ni (Huaihua), Professor Liu Xiangming (Yueyang), Professor Peng Qilong (Zhuzhou 331 Aier), Professor Tang Jiuhong (Loudi), Professor Xie Jianguo (Shaoyang), Professor Zou Gaoren (Hengyang), and Professor Gao Qianying (former Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center).

Key Presentations

Professor Chen Zhongping:
Shared FCB clinical research (12 retinal detachment patients, aged 33–69, 2020.06–2022.09), highlighting FCB’s advantages: high retinal reattachment rate, minimally invasive approach, and low postoperative complications. Case studies and surgical videos demonstrated FCB as a safe, effective alternative for simple rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), emphasizing proper patient selection and surgical technique. While vitreous surgery benefits complex cases, FCB offers unique advantages in simplicity, minimal invasion, and postoperative comfort (free positioning).
Professor Liu Xiangming:
Presented two FCB cases:
  1. A 61-year-old male with recurrent retinal detachment (1.5PD tear) successfully treated with FCB.
  2. A 19-year-old female with a 1/3PD retinal tear and limited detachment, achieving good results post-FCB.
Key takeaways: FCB excels in inferior hole cases, high myopia, and young patients; immediate postoperative laser (when retina is flat) is critical; advantages include speed, ease of use, no cryotherapy/anesthesia, low position requirements, and reversible drainage.
Dr. Liu Hengwei:
Detailed the study’s rationale, design, objectives, and innovations, focusing on comparative outcomes of subretinal vs. anterior chamber fluid drainage in RRD treated with FCB.
