Xianyang Aier Eye Hospital Successfully Performs FCB Surgery, Offering New Treatment for Retinal Detachment Patients

Release time: Feb 10,2025

Xianyang Aier Eye Hospital has successfully performed a foldable capsular buckle (FCB) implantation procedure. Dean Chen Xiaojin and Dean Jiang Xuguang successfully implanted an FCB in a 16-year-old patient with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, restoring the detached retina and improving visual acuity. The FCB implantation does not alter the intraocular environment, significantly shortens surgery time, and allows patients to maintain a free lying position postoperatively, enhancing the surgical experience.

Case Overview

The patient, 16-year-old Xiao Z, had his left eye accidentally hit by a football in September 2024 but did not seek medical attention due to minimal discomfort at the time. However, vision decline occurred six months ago, and he recently visited Xianyang Aier Eye Hospital for examination. His left eye visual acuity was 1.0. Left eye fundus examination showed: clear disc margins in both eyes under small pupils, C/D ratio approximately 0.3, and visible macular center reflex. SLO (Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy) revealed a large retinal tear in the superotemporal region with surrounding retinal detachment.

Considering the patient’s young age and the preference for minimally invasive surgery, Dean Chen Xiaojin and Dean Jiang Xuguang developed a tailored treatment plan. After full communication with the patient and family, they decided to perform the latest minimally invasive retinal reattachment procedure: foldable capsular buckle (FCB) implantation.

The day after admission, the patient underwent left eye episcleral buckling + foldable capsular buckle (FCB) implantation under local anesthesia. Postoperatively, left eye retinal tear laser photocoagulation was performed, along with anti-inflammatory therapy, infection prevention, and mydriasis for symptomatic management. The patient’s left eye visual acuity improved, and the retina was reattached flat. The patient was satisfied with the postoperative results and expressed deep gratitude to the medical team.
