March 20, 2025— The second session of Live International Innovative Ophthalmic Surgery, titled "Ultra-Minimally Invasive FCB for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD) Treatment," successfully premiered under the China-Europe (Germany) Ophthalmology R&D Innovation Center event series.

This live demonstration featured

  • Prof. Chen Zhongping, Vice President of Changsha Aier Eye Hospital, as the surgeon;
  • Prof. Shalva Skhirtladze, Vitreoretinal Department Head at "Akhali Mzera" Eye Clinic (Tbilisi, Georgia), as the Chair & Commentator.
  • Over 100 global ophthalmologists from 30+ countries (Europe, U.S., Japan, etc.) observed the Foldable Capsular Buckle (FCB) implantation for RRD, exploring how technological innovation enhances retinal disease treatment.

Live Surgery Highlights

1. Case Presentation (by Prof. Shalva Skhirtladze):

  •  Patient: 59-year-old female with 4-day symptoms of left-eye floaters and temporal visual field obstruction.
  •  Findings: Superior bluish-gray retinal elevation involving the macula; 2PD horseshoe tear at 1 o’clock; blurred optic disc margin.

2. Surgical Breakthrough:

Prof. Chen performed FCB implantation with a "4-No" technique:

  •    No retrobulbar anesthesia
  •    No muscle traction
  •    No intraoperative localization
  •    No cryotherapy

The surgery reduced operative time significantly (vs. traditional scleral buckling’s 50 minutes) with ideal retinal reattachment and high patient satisfaction.

"FCB’s maturity marks China’s leap from ‘following’ to ‘leading’ in ophthalmology, addressing myopia in youth and aging populations." — Prof. Chen

3. Global Dialogue:

Experts discussed FCB’s indications, protocols, patient comfort, and surgical standard.

Prof. Shalva praised:  "FCB’s minimally invasive approach offers a ‘Chinese model’ for global retinal surgery."

Background & Future

  • First Session: Premiered on November 4, 2024, chaired by Prof. Hua Yan (Tianjin Medical University) with surgeon Prof. Tian Xuemin (PLA 988 Hospital) and Portuguese expert Prof. Filipe Cabrita.
  • Global Expansion: In September 2024, Vesber entered the China-Europe (Duisburg) Innovation Center (Germany) to advance FCB’s international adoption.
  • Upcoming: More FCB live surgeries will connect global retinal experts, delivering cutting-edge care to patients worldwide.
