Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital Performs FCVB Surgery to Preserve Ocular Integrity for Ocular Trauma Patients

Release time: Apr 28,2026

As a pioneer in FCVB surgery since 2021, Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital has performed this procedure for nearly 20 patients suffering from ocular trauma and silicone oil dependency to safeguard their ocular health with professional expertise. It represents the inheritance and upgrading of the hospital’s diagnostic and treatment technologies, as well as its commitment to delivering high-quality, precise medical services for patients with complex eye diseases.

On April 7th, the team led by Professor Qiao Lifeng from the Ophthalmology Department of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital successfully completed the implantation of the 3rd-generation Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB). The surgery saved the eyeball of a 55-year-old male patient dependent on intraocular silicone oil.

Case Overview

Mr. Z, 55, suffered left-eye vitreous hemorrhage due to ocular trauma two months ago. He previously received silicone oil tamponade surgery at our hospital for temporary disease control. During a recent follow-up visit for silicone oil removal, a comprehensive examination revealed severe eyeball atrophy after trauma surgery, accompanied by complications including aphakia and phthisis bulbi. Without timely intervention, progressive eyeball atrophy would inevitably lead to eye enucleation.

To address the patient’s critical condition, Professor Qiao Lifeng conducted a comprehensive individualized assessment and formulated a treatment plan with FCVB implantation. Through a minimally invasive incision, the folded FCVB was precisely implanted and fully unfolded intraoperatively. Subsequent silicone oil injection effectively supported the eyeball structure.

The standardized and smooth operation successfully maintained the integrity of the patient’s eyeball and restored his confidence in daily life.

3D Reconstruction of FCB Successfully Published in Clinical Ophthalmology

This research not only shortens the learning curve and lowers the technical threshold of FCB surgery, but also lays a solid foundation for its standardized promotion in primary hospitals and among special populations (such as children, pregnant women, and highly myopic patients), truly realizing a minimally invasive, precise and reproducible clinical pathway.
