Professor Zhu Jundong from Changsha Aier Eye Hospital Successfully Performed the Third-Generation FCVB Surgery
Recently, Changsha Aier Eye Hospital received a patient with extremely severe ocular trauma. Professor Zhu Jundong successfully performed the third-generation foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB) implantation surgery for him, saving his eyeball and preserving hope!
Condition Overview
Mr. Z, a 59-year-old local in Hunan, had an accident on August 25. A small iron piece hit his right eye, causing immediate blindness in that eye. He was sent to Changsha Aier Eye Hospital for treatment 4 hours later. After examination, Professor Zhu Jundong diagnosed him with "right eye intraocular foreign body, right eye traumatic hyphema, right eye aphakia, right eye vitreous hemorrhage, right eye postoperative corneal-scleral laceration, and right eye endophthalmitis". Traditional treatment for ocular trauma involves vitrectomy combined with silicone oil tamponade. However, Mr. Z's injury was so severe that his eyeball was at risk of being enucleated. To save the eyeball, after full communication with the patient, Professor Zhu decided to perform "right eye posterior approach vitrectomy + right eye intraocular foreign body removal + right eye foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB) implantation".
On August 30, with the full cooperation of Professor Zhu's team, a 25mm long and thin iron piece was first removed. Then, scleral puncture preparation, central vitrectomy, and peripheral vitrectomy were performed. Finally, the third-generation FCVB was successfully implanted.

The removed iron piece On the second day after the surgery, Mr. Z's examination showed a deep anterior chamber, intraocular pressure of 12, and the capsular position was correct. He was satisfied with the postoperative effect and was very grateful to Professor Zhu for saving his eyeball.
Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB)
The foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB) is the first internationally innovative product that simulates the natural vitreous body of the human eye. It consists of a capsule, a drainage tube, a drainage valve, and a fixation loop. The capsule is precisely simulated based on the parameters of the human vitreous cavity through computer technology, with a special crystal surface plane design. The raw material is a medical silicone polymer imported with US FDA approval. During the surgery, the capsule is folded and implanted into the vitreous cavity, and silicone oil is injected through the drainage valve. The capsule is fixed in the eye through double loops of the fixation loop and suture of the drainage tube, isolating the damage of silicone oil to the ciliary body. The capsule can retain the posterior chamber space, allowing the ciliary body to slowly recover its function, saving the disabled ciliary body and maintaining intraocular pressure; it avoids silicone oil emulsification and displacement; and fully supports the retina and maintains the shape of the eyeball.

Third-Generation FCVB
- The drainage tube and drainage valve are reduced and folded back into the eyeball;
- 2. A fixation loop structure is added to fix the capsule, making it more stable in the eye;
- 3. The diameter of the capsule and the optical zone is fine-tuned, and a new AV-10PX model is added to make the product more suitable for atrophic eyeballs;
- 4. Implantation through the corneal limbus incision is safer and more convenient.
Doctor's Profile

Professor Zhu Jundong Doctor of Medicine, Chief Physician Director of the Ocular Trauma Department, Changsha Aier Eye Hospital Master's Supervisor, Vice Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Ocular Trauma Group He has been engaged in clinical diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases for 25 years, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular trauma, vitreoretinal diseases, cataracts, glaucoma, etc. He has over 50,000 surgical experiences. He has presided over or participated in multiple provincial and municipal scientific research projects and published nearly 50 professional papers in well-known international and domestic journals, including 5 SCI-indexed articles.

Changsha Aier Eye Hospital Founded in July 2002, after 20 years of development, the hospital has grown into an innovative and modern eye hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, blindness prevention, and preventive health care. With "one hospital with four institutes", it presents a vigorous situation of comprehensive and coordinated development of medical treatment, teaching, and research, and a reasonable echelon of medical talents, scientific research talents, and management talents. The new hospital is located in the South Tower of Aier Building, No. 188 Furong South Road, Tianxin District, with a construction area of over 100,000 square meters, 224 open beds, 124 consulting rooms, and 27 operating rooms. At 20 years old, Changsha Aier has officially opened a new chapter of high-quality and high-speed development of the hospital.
During the postoperative review, Xiao Z’s left-eye retinal break was completely closed, the symptoms of photopsia and floaters disappeared, and his corrected visual acuity improved. "We didn't expect such a quick recovery. The child only missed a few classes and returned to campus soon. We are truly grateful to the medical team!" the parents said, expressing their deep thanks to the president and Professor Zhou.
