Polish Professor Performs 9 Cases of Third-Generation FCVB Surgery: Chinese Innovative Technology Brings New Hope for Eye Preservation in Europe
On December 17th, Dr. Slawomir Cisiecki from Dr. Charles Jonscher Municipal Hospital in Lodz successfully performed another third-generation foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB) surgery, marking his 9th FCVB procedure. From October 2023 to September 2024, Professor Cisiecki had sequentially carried out 8 cases of third-generation FCVB surgery.
FCVB, an internationally pioneering technology for eye preservation, offers a new treatment approach for patients with severe retinal detachment, ocular trauma, and silicone oil-dependent ocular fundus diseases, holding significant importance for saving patients' eyeballs. Since 2018, FCVB has gone global, bringing new hope to ophthalmic patients worldwide. It has been clinically applied in 11 countries overseas, including the UK, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, the Netherlands, Poland, Latvia, Pakistan, Georgia, Russia, and Australia, earning praise and recognition from renowned international ophthalmologists and physicians. With the product upgraded to the third generation, more and more overseas experts are adopting this new technology in their countries.
Professor Slawomir Cisiecki has consecutively performed 9 FCVB surgeries from October 2023 to the present, including 3 females and 6 males, aged between 17 and 82 years old.
Case 01
A 76-year-old female with light perception in the right eye, low intraocular pressure, retinal detachment, and ciliary body detachment.
FCVB was implanted on October 13, 2023. One-year follow-up showed the right eye intraocular pressure at 8 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 02
A 28-year-old female with light perception in the left eye, low intraocular pressure, and a history of vitrectomy.
FCVB was implanted on October 19, 2023. One-year follow-up showed the left eye intraocular pressure at 15 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 03
A 47-year-old male with hand movement perception in the right eye, intraocular pressure of 5 mmHg, and multiple vitrectomies.
FCVB was implanted on October 11, 2023. One-year follow-up showed the right eye intraocular pressure at 6 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 04
A 50-year-old male with light perception in the left eye, low intraocular pressure due to previous trauma, and a history of vitrectomy with viscoelastic injection.
FCVB was implanted on October 19, 2023. One-year follow-up showed the left eye intraocular pressure at 17 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 05
A 64-year-old male with preoperative light perception in the left eye, low intraocular pressure, and multiple vitrectomies.
FCVB was implanted on October 13, 2023. One-year follow-up showed the left eye intraocular pressure at 17 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 06
A 61-year-old female with a history of scleral buckling and multiple vitrectomies for silicone oil filling and removal in the left eye. Preoperative intraocular pressure was 5 mmHg.
FCVB was implanted on September 1, 2024. Three-month follow-up showed the left eye intraocular pressure at 12 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 07
A 17-year-old male with preoperative silicone oil filling, band-shaped keratopathy, and intraocular pressure of 4 mmHg in the right eye.
FCVB was implanted on September 1, 2024. Three-month follow-up showed the right eye intraocular pressure at 12 mmHg, with good outcomes.
Case 08
An 82-year-old male with a history of multiple vitrectomies with silicone oil filling, intraocular lens implantation, and previous corneal transplantation for corneal lesions in the right eye. Preoperative intraocular pressure was 6 mmHg.
FCVB was implanted on September 1, 2024. Three-month follow-up showed the right eye intraocular pressure at 14 mmHg, with good outcomes.
On December 17th, Slawomir Cisiecki performed the 9th third-generation FCVB surgery on a silicone oil-dependent patient: a 43-year-old male with multiple vitrectomies and silicone oil filling in the right eye. Preoperative examination showed silicone oil displacement into the anterior chamber and intraocular pressure of 9 mmHg. FCVB was implanted on the 17th, and the postoperative condition is being continuously monitored.

The successful surgery has given Slawomir Cisiecki more confidence. He plans to carry out the 10th third-generation FCVB surgery and is currently applying for ethical approval.
If God has closed a door for patients with ocular trauma and silicone oil-dependent eyes, FCVB has opened another window for them. There are still many ophthalmic patients worldwide living in darkness. The earlier and more widely FCVB is introduced, the more and faster it can help these patients and bring them hope!

Dr. Charles Jonscher Municipal Hospital in Lodz

With a long history, this hospital was officially opened as the K. Scheibler Factory Hospital on September 1, 1884, and has been commemorating Dr. Charles Jonscher ever since. In 1910, one of the earliest X-ray laboratories in the Kingdom of Poland was established here. After undergoing the trials of World War I and World War II, the hospital has developed rapidly, with comprehensive departments, gathering expertise from European countries and accumulating extensive and profound medical technologies. It is one of the largest general public hospitals in Poland.
As a pioneer in FCVB surgery since 2021, Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital has performed this procedure for nearly 20 patients suffering from ocular trauma and silicone oil dependency to safeguard their ocular health with professional expertise. It represents the inheritance and upgrading of the hospital’s diagnostic and treatment technologies, as well as its commitment to delivering high-quality, precise medical services for patients with complex eye diseases.
