Air Force Special Medical Center Successfully Performs FCB Surgery, Providing New Treatment for Retinal Detachment Patients
Release time: Jan 26,2025
On January 13, 2025, the Air Force Special Medical Center successfully performed afoldable capsular buckle (FCB)implantation procedure. Professor Liu Yong's team successfully implanted an FCB in a patient with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, restoring the detached retina and improving visual acuity. As a new treatment option for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, this procedure marks a further advancement in the hospital's minimally invasive, painless, and efficient approach to treating fundus diseases, particularly rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
Case Overview
Mr. H (pseudonym), a 31-year-old patient, experienced blurred vision and visual distortion in his left eye one month prior. He recently visited the Air Force Special Medical Center for examination, where his left eye visual acuity was found to have dropped to 0.4, and even with corrective glasses, the vision could not be significantly improved (right eye visual acuity was normal at 1.0). Fundus photography initially suggested a suspicious retinal tear and shallow retinal detachment in the lower area of the left eye, with macular detachment. This description is revised as follows: Fundus photography revealed a definite retinal tear in the inferotemporal region of the left eye, causing extensive retinal detachment in the lower area of the left eye, including macular detachment, which led to significant visual acuity decline in the left eye.

If Mr. H had sought medical attention promptly after the onset of symptoms one month ago, simple retinal laser photocoagulation might have effectively controlled the progression of the disease. However, as the condition worsened over the month, the area of retinal detachment expanded, and the patient's vision deteriorated significantly. Retinal laser treatment was no longer effective. Considering the patient's condition and specific circumstances, Professor Liu developed a tailored treatment plan. After full communication with the patient and family, it was decided to perform the latest minimally invasive retinal reattachment procedure:foldable capsular buckle (FCB)retinal reattachment surgery.
With thorough preparation, Professor Liu's team successfully performed the FCB retinal reattachment surgery. Under local anesthesia, the FCB was implanted into the patient's left eye to achieve episcleral buckling. The patient reported no unusual discomfort during the procedure, which was completed smoothly. Postoperatively, the retinal tear in the left eye was ideally sealed, with excellent treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.
As a pioneer in FCVB surgery since 2021, Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital has performed this procedure for nearly 20 patients suffering from ocular trauma and silicone oil dependency to safeguard their ocular health with professional expertise. It represents the inheritance and upgrading of the hospital’s diagnostic and treatment technologies, as well as its commitment to delivering high-quality, precise medical services for patients with complex eye diseases.
Compared to conventional surgery, FCB implantation offers significant advantages. The procedure requires only a 4mm conjunctival incision, causes minimal tissue damage, and results in less postoperative pain and faster recovery.
